The Westerly Water Department supplies the town from twelve gravel-packed wells across seven well fields in the Pawcatuck River Aquifer Region, at sites off Bradford Road, Old Carriage Road, Pound Road and White Rock Road. Treatment includes mixed oxidants for disinfection, pH adjustment, and polyphosphate for corrosion control.
Because the supply is groundwater rather than surface water, Westerly’s water carries the mineral profile of the aquifer it comes from. The department’s own reporting puts sodium at roughly 20 ppm on average, with a wide range across the system, and it addresses sediment through periodic water main flushing — which is why a neighbourhood can see temporarily cloudy or discoloured water after hydrant work.
Beyond the served area — the rural end of Bradford, the roads toward Hopkinton and the Ashaway line — homes draw from their own wells in the same aquifer system.

Rhode Island’s Department of Health suggests private well owners test every year for coliform bacteria, nitrate and nitrite, colour, chloride, sodium and turbidity; every three to five years for metals, corrosivity and hardness; and every five to ten years for volatile organic compounds.
